The course provides students with a comprehensive introduction to Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW). Students will develop a strong foundation in welding safety, arc welding power sources, electrode classification and selection. Emphasis is placed on hands-on training, with approximately 85% of the course dedicated to practical welding exercises and 15% to classroom instruction. Students will gain the skills necessary to produce quality single and multi-pass fillet welds in all positions on ¼” mild steel plate using both low-hydrogen and deep penetrating electrodes, 3/8” mild steel plate V-Grooves with Backing in all positions using low-hydrogen electrodes, as well as multi-pass fillet welds on ½” mild steel plate using low-hydrogen electrodes.
Prerequisite: There are no prerequisites for this course.
