Hobart Institute hosting Southwest Regional Welding Competition

On February 1st, Hobart Institute had the pleasure of hosting the Southwest Regional Welding Competition for the state of Ohio.  The event began early with competitors arriving at 7:30 AM for the all-day event.  The competition had two individual events: a Welding Skills Competition and a Welding Fabrication Competition.  The fabrication competition had a team of students who built a welding cart.  They were given a set of plans and were judged on how well they executed the measuring, cutting and welding of the cart.  Additionally, they were to provide drawings and step by step photos of their progress.  The welding skills competition had students welding Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Gas Tungsten Arc Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding and Oxyfuel Cutting.  Students spend many hours preparing for the competition and it showed in the skill of their chosen craft.  Congratulations to the winners:

First place – Matthew Fathman, Diamond Oaks

Second place – Liam Lawson, Springfield-Clark

Third Place – Daniel McCollough, D. Russel Lee CTC

Welding Fabrication Competition:

First place – Brady Logan, Caleb Scheidt and Andrew Warren, D. Russel Lee CTC

Second place – Keegan Ackley, Hayden Kleine and William Schallick, Diamond Oaks

Third place – Joshua Doyle, Jarrett Lozan and Dylan McClure, Springfield-Clark CTC


Winners will compete at the state competition that will be held in Columbus, Ohio on April 7th and 8th.
