NEW 6TH
EDITION
MODERN WELDING
TECHNOLOGY
Troy, OH. November 16, 2004 --
A well-accepted textbook has been released in a
newly updated and revised 6th edition.
Scott Helzer, PhD. is introducing readers to the
latest welding technical information and
advancements in technology through the addition of
hybrid welding and friction stir welding in this
recently published Modern Welding Technology.
Adding his expertise to the years of experience of
the original author, Howard B. Cary (1920-2001), Dr.
Scott Helzer has enhanced this publication by
revising the content throughout.
Serving as a national faculty member for Embry
Riddle Aeronautical University, Dr. Helzer also
works as a consultant for the American Welding
Society and serves on national AWS welding
committees. He holds a Ph.D. from Texas A&M
University with a specialization in welding
metallurgy and nondestructive testing and
inspection.
“This edition marks the passing of one of welding
industries great talents, Howard Cary,” says Scott
Helzer. “As part of the group known as the greatest
generation, he contributed much to the industry we
know as welding. If you listened carefully as
Howard spoke, he spoke of many processes and
technologies in the first person. They were his
processes and his improvements and his inventions.
He certainly exemplified the traits and
characteristics of the greatest generation.”
Modern Welding Technology continues to be a
leading introductory textbook building a strong
foundation for students’ knowledge and continuing
study. The latest standards, codes, and
specifications have been incorporated into the
features, along with the background concepts and
basic welding techniques. With emphasis on the arc
welding processes, the use of steel for industry and
construction is thoroughly examined and examples of
welding problems and solutions are provided.
Devoting an entire chapter to welding power sources,
the book guides students to become familiar with
current equipment and innovative laser processes.
While continuing to provide a comprehensive coverage
of basic principles and theory, the authors have
demonstrated the importance of selecting the proper
application for welding and encourage the reader to
gain a more thorough understanding of the
requirements for welding.
“Welding has always played an important role in my
life,” continues Dr. Helzer. “From the first arc
that I struck at the age of six under my
grandfather’s watchful eye and steady hand to the
one I made just yesterday some 40 years later. Yes
welding is changing, but it is still the same. Like
the satisfaction you feel when you raise your helmet
and see the weld that you just produced, one that is
the right size, the right shape… one that will be
holding those parts in place long after I have left
this planet.”
