EDUCATION IS
IMPORTANT – ESPECIALLY TO THOSE WHO TEACH
As he
approaches his third anniversary [February 2008] as an
instructor with Hobart Institute of Welding Technology,
Bryce Obaugh continues to further his own education
while teaching others to weld.
In August,
Bryce completed a pair of ASM courses,
Metallographic Techniques Online and
Introduction to Metallurgical Lab Practices. These
courses will expand his knowledge in the use of
metallographic equipment; identify the best laboratory
practices; identify mechanical properties and
microstructural characteristics in welds; interpret test
data; and increase familiarity with the principles of
metallography for both ferrous and nonferrous metals.
Through the
application of this knowledge, Bryce will be able to provide
a deeper understanding of the consequences of wrong welding
techniques to his students at Hobart Institute
“Hobart
Institute is interested in providing ongoing education to
its instructors,” says Vice President Ron Scott. “Each step
forward for them is an enhancement to our goals of offering
the best education for our students.”
Bryce
completed the nine-month
Combination Structural and Pipe Welding program at
Hobart Institute in 2001 following graduation from
William Byrd High School in Vinton, Virginia. He
proceeded through the technology-based Mechanical
Engineering Technology/ Welding Technology program at
Edison Community College, earning an associate degree in
May 2004. He then gained industry experience in a Quality
Assurance / Quality Control position at
Faurecia Exhaust
Systems in Troy.
“I find
welding fascinating because a lot of time and thought goes
into it. It is not just connecting metal together,”
explains Bryce. “I decided to further my education at
Edison so that I would not need to spend my entire life
under a shield. I enjoy the challenges of teaching others.”
