Winter 2007-2008 World of Welding

DUSTIN CALDWELL NAMED RECIPIENT OF CARY SCHOLARSHIP

Dustin Caldwell of Nevada, Ohio, has been awarded the 2007 Howard B. Cary Scholarship at the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology.  Dustin is a 2006 graduate of Wynford High School, Bucyrus, Ohio, and Pioneer Career and Technology Center, Shelby, Ohio

Dustin is pursuing the Combination Structural and Pipe Welding Program at Hobart Institute.

“As long as I can remember, I have always enjoyed taking things apart, building things, and working with my hands,” says Dustin.

“Dustin is not afraid of hard work,” states Anna Mae Matsick, Counselor at Wynford High School.  “He always was willing to assist with projects of any kind.”

“A pleasant and mature personality is one of his strongest attributes,” Anna Mae continues.  “He is very excited about his future and determined to do his very best.”

“I am anxious to learn how to weld on titanium and magnesium,” says Dustin.  “I would like to get as many certifications as I can prior to graduation, including pipe certifications.”

“Dustin is honest and works hard at work and in school,” says Kip Stevens, Welding Instructor at Pioneer Career and Technology Center.  “He has good attendance records as well.”

In addition to school, Dustin has worked at Bucyrus Blades, a manufacturer of cutting edges and equipment for the mining, quarry, construction, and snow removal industries, and through Acloche Staffing at Baja Marine Corporation, manufacturer of high performance boats.

“My plans for the future include having a successful and rewarding career in the field of welding.  I would like to work for NASA and one day have my own race shop, where I can build custom turbo exhaust manifolds, intercoolers, exhaust systems, intake manifolds, roll cages, and other accessories,” says Dustin.

“I believe the experience to be gained from attending Hobart will help me accomplish my goals of improving my welding skills and education,” Dustin continues.  “I am also considering attending college to work on an engineering degree.”

Dustin has the full support of his parents, Chuck and Sharon Caldwell, as well as that of Robert Hamilton, Pastor of Nevada Lutheran Church.

“I have known Dustin for over 15 years,” says Robert.  “If Dustin says that he will do something, you can count on him doing it.”

The Howard B. Cary Scholarship was established by the Hobart Institute in memory of Howard B. Cary(1920-2001) who dedicated his career to welding and excellence in welding education.  Howard served as president of Hobart Institute of Welding Technology, as vice president of Hobart Brothers Company, and as president of the American Welding Society.  He held five patents, authored over 100 technical articles, and wrote two books.  Howard was also the recipient of many awards in the welding industry.  The scholarship is awarded September 1 of each year.  Deadline for application is August 1.  Application may be obtained from  http://www.welding.org/scholarship.pdf or by calling 1-800-332-9448, ext. 5000.
