Winter 2004-2005 World of Welding

HEATH KILL EARNS CARY SCHOLARSHIP

The Hobart Institute awards the 2004 Howard B. Cary Scholarship to J. Heath Kill of Cashmere, Washington.  Heath will apply this scholarship toward the Combination Structural and Pipe Welding Program

“Hobart Institute is my first choice of education toward my goal of becoming a welder,” says Heath.  “I believe education is essential in securing a career and broadening our views of the workforce, world, people, and life.  My goal is to become a certified welder and possibly continuing into engineering or teaching welding.”

Heath became interested in welding when he enrolled in a high school Agriculture Mechanics class.  He has never backed away from a challenge and quickly steps up to accept responsibility.

“I found a challenge before me,” explains Heath.  “By taking part in helping others with various welding projects, participating in welding competitions, and enjoying the workforce, my future goals have become much clearer.”

“Heath is a truly remarkable student when it comes to mechanical knowledge,” says Jed Odenrider, Cashmere High School Agriculture/Mechanics teacher.  “He is an especially talented fabricator with a good knowledge of machining as well as an adequate grasp of mechanical concepts.”

“I have seen his work in both steel and aluminum and it is far beyond what one would expect from an individual his age,” comments Sam Willsey, Ed. D., Principal at Cashmere High School.

Heath has served as an FFA officer and won first place on the District Welding Team.  He was awarded Cashmere Rotary Vocational Student Award, 2003; Cashmere Community Club Service Award, 2003; Wenatchee WorkSource Employers Award, 2003; and Cashmere High School Faculty Award, 2003.  Along with playing football and baseball during high school, Heath was active in Scouting and earned the Eagle Scout Award.

“Heath is giving of himself in all that he does,” says Karin Blomquist, Cashmere High School teacher.  “He is organized, loyal, goal-oriented, determined, and very concerned and caring towards other people.”

Employed by the U.S. Forest Service as a firefighter, Heath is a 2003 graduate of Cashmere High School and is the son of Jim and Shelly Kill.

The Howard B. Cary Scholarship is one of three scholarships awarded each year by the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology.  The application deadline for the Raymond C. Dunlavy Scholarship is December 1 and for the Robert Bercaw Scholarship is April 1.  The Hobart Institute also honors scholarships awarded by other organizations or individuals including the American Welding Society, the Joseph Capra Scholarship, and scholarships that are presented on a local level.  The Hobart Institute does not discriminate on the basis of disability, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or age. Application may be obtained from the Institute web site at http://www.welding.org/scholarship.pdf or by calling 1-800-332-9448, ext. 5560 or (937) 332-5560.
