December 2004
Dear Reader,
It is a great honor and a distinct pleasure to inform you that
Hobart Institute of Welding Technology celebrates its 75th
anniversary during the year 2005. Since its inception in 1930,
we have conducted over 5,000 weeks of corporate welding training
and our instructors and experts have trained over 80,000
welders. These young men and women enter the workforce with a
respectable earning power and help to reduce the continuing
shortage of trained welders. The average age of today’s skilled
welders is in the mid 50’s and if most retire in the next ten
years the existing shortage of skilled welders will increase.
Many students are from lower income families and must rely on
Federal loans, stipends or scholarships to finance their welding
training. As one of our initiatives during the celebration year
2005, we are providing the opportunity to contribute to a
scholarship at HIWT. This will make it possible for more young
people to learn how to weld and to create a living for
themselves. Please consider sponsoring any of the programs, or
part of a program, listed in this issue and send me your
completed donation form. Your donation to this 501 (c) 3
organization is tax-deductible. On behalf of HIWT directors,
faculty, staff and the students who will benefit from your
generosity, I want to thank you from the depth of my heart. We
want to leave no student behind!
With gratitude and appreciation,

Andre A. Odermatt
