Summer 2008 World of Welding

IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR

Neil Mansfield of Massachusetts shared this page of photos revealing pipeline welding in the early 1980’s  for the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific.

Neil says, “I learned how to weld at Hobart Institute with Mr. Ernie Jones as my teacher.  I went on to welding school at the U.S. Navy base in California to be certified; then on to Subic Bay, Philippines, to be certified once again.  The test was 6-inch, schedule 80 in a 6G position and was 3-inches from one wall and 3-inches from the other wall.  I managed to pass the x-ray test and then go on to weld this pipeline.”

“The temperatures were in the 100’s,” Neil continues.  “I wore rubber gloves, rubber boots and knee pads and had to make a tent to weld in because there was so much rain.”
