The concept of “training the trainer” has been embraced for many
years at the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology. This type
of education and cooperation works especially well when the
trainers are taking the knowledge obtained at the Hobart
Institute half way around the world. Two student / teachers
from the eastern province of the
Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia came to the United States in 2004 to do just that.
Abdullah Al-Huzaim of Dammam and Mohammed Al-Qahtani of Riyadh
arrived in Ohio in March of 2004 and began taking English
classes at Wright State
University. On October 11, 2004, they arrived at the Hobart
Institute where they began their intense, specialized training
to solidify their welding skills. In May 2005, they took the
Preparation for the AWS Certified Welding Inspector / Educator
Examination course and the AWS CWI exam before returning
to the Jubail Technical Institute (JTI) to teach others to weld.
Specialized training is an area in which the Hobart Institute
excels. For many years, HIWT has worked with customers to
tailor training to meet specific objectives. Experts work to
assess the needs, identify the training requirements, and make a
recommendation to the customer to best improve their operations
and their bottom line. Scheduling and location for training are
flexible.
Welding is one of the training areas identified at Jubail
Technical Institute where a new building housing 20 welding
booths and equipped with
Miller Electric Manufacturing Co. welding supplies, was
recently constructed. The institute has recently been built by
the Jubail Royal Commission to serve the needs of the local
industries that are constantly seeking highly trained and
certified welders. Both Abdullah and Mohammed hold
manufacturing and mechanical engineering degrees from Jubail
Industrial College.
“Pipe welders are in demand, especially for the petrochemical
industry,” says Mohammed. “Previously, we had taught basic
welding courses. The Hobart training will allow us to expand
and offer a pipe welding program.”
“We have 20 students in each of our classes,” Abdullah says.
“We also offer specialized training for companies.”
A
two-year diploma may be earned in various skills at JTI. It is
one of the few institutes in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that
offers an English-medium education. The objectives of JTI
include:
-
To open new channels of technical training for Saudi youth
in conformity with the Kingdom's development plans.
-
To meet the requirements of technically trained manpower in
accordance with the specified job descriptions and
international standards of quality.
-
To attract and develop qualified Saudis to replace foreign
manpower.
-
To provide consultancy services for industry.
-
To provide tailor-made courses to meet the specific needs of
industry
-
To provide community service programs which may have
cultural, professional or recreational benefits.
Hobart Institute is helping JTI to
meet these objectives by bringing the talents of Abdullah Al-Huzaim
and Mohammed Al-Qahtani to a higher level of expertise. They
will then take their knowledge and the Hobart curriculum
materials back to their country to share and teach others to
weld which, in turn, will benefit Saudi industry.
