Summer 2004 World of Welding

IMAGINE YOUR LIFE WITHOUT IT

By Marty Baker
Editor

The next time someone asks you, “Why do you want to be a welder?” I would suggest responding with, “Imagine your life without welding!”

Imagine your life without… bicycles, airplanes, automobiles, ships, buses or trains.  Imagine your life without… kitchen appliances or many of the tools we use each day.  Imagine your life without… bridges or skyscrapers… or high-rise buildings… or airports… or water towers… or pipelines.  Imagine factories without equipment… farms without wagons or tractors… coal mines without excavating equipment.  Imagine a life without telecommunications.

Welding touches nearly every aspect of our lives, whether it is linked to the powerhouses that produce our electricity or the pumping stations that deliver water to our homes.  We don’t leave our homes without using some sort of transportation.  Welding is vital to our economy.

Welding began as a repair or maintenance tool and has become one of the most important manufacturing methods and the most important construction method.  While it appears to be very simple, welding involves more sciences and variables than any other industrial process.  Because of this, welding is creative, challenging and interesting.  Welding can be used anywhere and provides flexibility in design and repair.  It has become very complex and technical and requires knowledge to select the proper welding process for each application.  Procedures must be provided for all applications and internal inspection is often required to assure quality.

Manual welding depends greatly on the human factor.  But it is important to remember that an intelligently designed, properly constructed weldment is the best and lowest cost solution for joining any metal product.  Trained and qualified personnel, good supervision, qualified procedures, and nondestructive evaluation can overcome any limitations imposed by the wide variety of factors involved in striving for that perfect weld.

Welding can trace its historic development back 2000 years and will be present in our lives as long as metals are available.  For 74 years, the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology has been providing training and certification to meet the needs of individuals and industry.  National standards are in place for the education and certification of welders and the Hobart Institute meets or exceeds those standards.  So accept the challenge and develop the art of welding by becoming a student at the Hobart Institute today!  It is hard to imagine your life without it!
