Spring 2008 World of Welding

Rosie the Riveter - 50 years later!

Half a century after Rosie the Riveter made headlines as the icon for women doing “men’s” work, a woman welder made the surprising discovery -- she still had to wear men's coveralls because no one made them for women.  This is something that might have been expected in the 1940s, when women began to work in what had previously been male-dominated occupations.  But when Sharon Moore took a welding class in 2002 and realized that coveralls were a must, she still found only men’s sizes.  Sharon decided to change that.

She conducted extensive research for the best fabric, special features such as removable knee pads, and just the right pattern.  A year later, Rosies® coveralls were on the market.  The first Rosies were in Utah and sold wholesale at trade shows to specialty hardware stores and garden centers.

These are not your father’s coveralls.  The 100% cotton fabric is soft, durable, and lightweight in a wide range of fun and flattering colors and fabrics.  Sized to be worn over clothing, Rosies come in full length and Capri styles, in a variety of patterns—always with a coordinating trademark polka-dot bandana.

Today, they are being worn by women welders, truckers, machinists, auto mechanics, airplane maintenance and heavy equipment operators.  Like the woman for whom they are named, Rosies are pretty, hard-working, and durable, but with a softer side.  They are also great for gardeners, painters, farmers, ranchers, decorators, do-it-yourselfers, artists, and equestrians.  Rosies are for working women of all kinds and ages who need protective clothing.  Today's Rosie is very much like her World War II counterpart, except that now you can find her everywhere - not just in the factory.

A brand new style of Rosies—overalls—is coming soon. The 2008 line will include the much-demanded new overalls in a variety of colors that will all convert to shorts!

Cotton tees in coordinating pastels feature Rosies’ own silhouette designs depicting working women in eight real-world poses. Denim hats with the Rosies logo, polka-dot lunch pails, and sew-on patches such as Women Working, We Can Do It! and I Love Power Tools are also available.

Rosies are machine wash and dry. Removable kneepads should be taken out before laundering.  Cut full to slip over clothing, Rosies have Velcro® closures and are long in the draw for easy reaching and stretching.   Removable knee pads are made of flexible foam that does not bind, but moves with you.

Packaged in convenient, plastic tote bags, Rosies come as a three piece set: coveralls, kneepads, and polka-dot bandana.  Rosies coveralls come in two styles: full-length, featuring long sleeves with cuffs, and Capri length with a ¾-length sleeve. For petites, the Capri length provides a full-length pant.
