MARK HOLBROOK RECEIVES
JOSEPH CAPRA SCHOLARSHIP
Mark Holbrook of Otego,
New York, was recently awarded the Joseph Capra Scholarship that
helped to pave his way to further his education at the Hobart
Institute of Welding Technology. A 2004 graduate of
Laurens Central School
and BOCES (Board of
Cooperative Educational Services) Otsego Area Occupational
Center, Mark became interested in welding because he knew he
didn’t want a career behind a desk.
Mark was able to
by-pass the basic shielded metal arc welding course through
prerequisite testing at the Hobart Institute because his two
years of vocational welding under the direction of Ed Bordinger
prepared him well.
“Hobart
definitely offers more advanced training. I find welding to be
challenging and interesting,” says Mark. “It presents a lot of
opportunity and is a skill that is always needed in the
workplace.”
Mark speaks from
experience. He has worked as a machinery operator alongside his
father, Claude Holbrook, in the family excavating and logging
business and has helped with welding repair of equipment and
machinery.
In his leisure
time, Mark enjoys snowmobiling, 4-wheeling, fishing and deer
hunting near his home in upstate New York and looks forward to
returning to those activities when he completes the
Combination Structural and Pipe Welding Program at
Hobart in April.
The Joseph Capra
Scholarship is available to students from the State of New York
who qualify and choose to attend the Hobart Institute. Contact:
