CRAIG
SNYDER EARNS
RAYMOND C. DUNLAVY SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship committee,
representing Hobart Institute of Welding Technology, recently
awarded the Raymond C. Dunlavy Scholarship to Craig Joseph
Snyder. Craig is a
January 2004 graduate of Vermilion
High School and EHOVE
Career Center in Milan, Ohio.
“From a very young age, I have been interested in working
with my hands and have never passed up the opportunity to take
apart and rebuild a wagon or bike,” says Craig.
“The idea of creating something from a piece of raw
material is an exciting aspect to me in the field of welding.”
“Craig has distinguished himself to me as an individual who
can face challenges head-on and accomplish things with wisdom
beyond his years,” comments Patrick J. Buckley, a long-time
acquaintance of Craig’s.
“This young man has also shown to me a talent for
mechanical problem-solving, and the ability to solve difficult
fabrication problems I have encountered in building a race car.
His talent for welding and fabricating gives me
confidence in knowing that if I needed help in figuring out a
mechanical engineering problem, I could ask for his assistance
and he would apply himself to the problem.
He would find a solution that would be both practical and
economical.”
Along with completing his senior requirements by the end of
the first semester, Craig also participated in a summer
internship at Roth Manufacturing Company.
Charles E. Livermore, Welding Instructor at EHOVE Career
Center explains, “Craig was involved in a 5th
quarter program in which an individual must maintain a B+ grade
average in all curriculum and cannot miss more than three days
of school for the year. To
meet these requirements, the student is in an intern program in
the field of welding. He
receives a paycheck and during his senior year he may work at
his employment and it is credited as his lab.
Craig decided not to co-op his senior year, but rather to
get more hands on experience and to learn other processes.
I think this speaks for his willingness to learn.”
“Craig took on the responsibility of his [summer] job with
a very mature attitude,” says Larry Arnold of the Roth
Company. “His fellow employees at Roth found Craig to be eager
to work on and complete his assigned projects.
Craig’s welding skills made it easy to assign him
projects with the confidence that it would be completed with the
quality required by the Roth Company.”
Craig is a good student in the classroom and a leadership
student at EHOVE Career Center.
“As a student, he is intelligent and articulate,” says
Dona Faust, EHOVE Career Center Counselor.
“I am impressed by his attitudes and deep desire to
learn. He always
wants to excel, thus putting forth maximum effort.
He is truly a role model for his peers.”
“I would like to someday open my own fabrication business.
By attending Hobart Institute, I will have the
opportunity to learn a variety of welding techniques.
Any successful career takes commitment and training.
I am committed to a career in welding and I am confident
that the training I will receive will assist me in attaining my
goals.”
Craig
is the son of Craig M. and JoAnne Snyder of Vermilion, Ohio.
The
Raymond C. Dunlavy Scholarship is one of three scholarships
