SHARING ARTISTIC ABILITY

Welding Instructor, Frank Roberts of the Tennessee Technology Center in Morristown was in Troy in October 2003 for the Preparation for the American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector/Educator (AWS-CWI/CWE) Examination course.  Previously, Frank had taken the Welding Instructor Course at the Hobart Institute, but this time he brought with him a picture and a story to share.

A couple years ago, Frank was looking for some doorstops for the Tennessee Technology facility and presented the challenge to then-student Brent Hartness.  Working from a paper copy of the logo of the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology, Brent set to work with a ½-inch plate of carbon steel and an oxyacetylene cutting torch.  Using the shielded metal arc welding process, Brent then welded the silhouette of a welder to the base.

“He made several of these for the shop,” says Frank.  “Brent also made the Welding sign on the wall using an oxyacetylene cutting torch on ¼-inch carbon steel and finishing it with gas tungsten arc welding.”

Brent graduated from the Tennessee Technology Center with a Combination Welder diploma.
