LARRY
FULK EARNS
PERFECT ATTENDANCE AWARD
The
Hobart Institute of Welding Technology has instituted a new
attendance award for students and Larry Dean Fulk is the first
recipient to earn the honor.
To those who know Larry, this comes as no surprise and
this isn’t the first time in his career that he has recorded
perfect attendance. His work ethic was impeccable as he completed 34 years of
service to Indiana Glass in Dunkirk, Indiana, before that
company closed its doors and Larry joined the ranks of those
calling themselves “displaced workers.”
While
employed in the Indiana Glass, Machine Repair Department, Larry
performed everything from routine maintenance to major overhauls
and rebuilding of equipment.
Larry completed 546 hours of in-house technical course
work and 8,000 hours of on-the-job training.
“When
I lost my job, I decided I wanted to increase my knowledge by
learning more about the skill of welding,” says Larry.
“I had heard about Hobart Institute and then obtained
approval to utilize my VA benefits here.”
Good
attendance is very important to companies for several reasons,
as indicated by Don Harris, former Indiana Glass Human Resource
Manager, “Having employees at work, on time, when scheduled,
is very important to companies.
Poor attendance leads to increased costs and directly
affects our ability to be competitive in the market place.”
In
some companies, absent workers can even shut down production
lines for a period of time.
Through the use of the Perfect Attendance Award, Hobart
Institute of Welding Technology is sending a message to students
that being reliable worker becomes a life style that is
necessary to maintain a steady job.
It goes a step beyond penalizing students who are
consistently late for classes.
It provides an incentive and a certificate that they can
carry with them to the workplace.
