PLAYING
WITH METAL
“Every time I get an opportunity, I enjoy playing with
metal in my father’s sheet metal shop,” says Seth Cornell of
Jeffersonville, Ohio. Seth
is in Troy to participate in the 9-month Combination
Structural and Pipe Welding Course at the Hobart
Institute of Welding Technology so he will have a “paying”
job while he “plays”!
For
Seth, however, “playing” involves creating beautiful art
pieces such as candle holders and wall sconces.
Recently, to commemorate the 100th anniversary
of flight, he chose to construct a true-to-scale 1903 Wright
Flyer.
“The
tin gas tank on the original 1903 plane that allowed the Wright
Brothers to fly for over an hour was constructed by a
tinsmith,” Seth commented.
Seth
chose copper for the plane construction and utilized an
acetylene gas soldering process to join the pieces in the
intricate design. Copper
is a relatively soft metal with a melting point of 1981 degrees
Fahrenheit, making it a good choice for this design.
It may be coated or polished to a high shine; however, it
will tarnish to a dull green or brown in the natural atmosphere.
Seth
has learned the artistic techniques from his step-father, Craig
Williams, who also constructs works of art from tin and copper
at his shop, Gathered Goods.
