CAREER PRESENTATION

Students at the Hobart Institute were recently treated to two presentations designed to enhance their knowledge of career opportunities.

MEMBERSHIP

Bryan Worley, Chairman of the Dayton, Ohio, Section of the American Welding Society provided the students with information and benefits of membership to include the AWS JobFind Service available at http://www.aws.org/jobfind/  This service enables job seekers to post their resume or apply directly for open positions with prospective employers.

Bryan also explained the networking advantages provided by the American Welding Society and how student members can benefit by attending meetings and interacting with peers and welding employers.  One of these opportunities is presented when the Dayton Section of AWS in cooperation with The Southern Ohio Forge & Anvil (SOFA) association holds a joint meeting annually to introduce members to blacksmithing through discussion, demonstrations and hands-on opportunities. Other monthly meetings are held at various companies in the area providing the opportunity to tour facilities and broaden the knowledge of members.

RECRUITMENT

A recruitment presentation by Wayne Petzke, Human Resources Manager with K&M Machine-Fabricating, Inc. increased the students’ awareness of employment opportunities at K&M in Cassopolis, Michigan.  Cassopolis is a rural, agricultural community located in southwestern Michigan just to the north of Elkhart and South Bend, Indiana. Wayne explained that K&M is the largest, privately owned employer in their area of the state.  A leader in the fabricating and machining of major components for the railroad, energy, construction, earthmoving, mining equipment, machine tool, and special machinery industries, K&M fabricates large parts utilizing gas metal arc and flux cored arc welding.  During the two shifts within the fabrication shop, employees are currently working 50-hour weeks with an opportunity for overtime.  A full line of benefits are also available.  Interested students who are completing their training in the near future were granted one-on-one interviews following the presentation.

“We have a continuing need for welders,” Wayne stated.  “Any Hobart graduates may forward their resumes to me.”
