Fall 2007 World of Welding

MICHAEL KNUTH RECEIVES WILLIAM B. AND MARCIA H. HOWELL SCHOLARSHIP

A native of Moundsville, West Virginia, Michael Knuth was awarded the William B. and Marcia H. Howell Scholarship for 2007.  Michael is a graduate of John Marshall High School in Glen Dale, West Virginia, where he has been a leader in welding.

“Michael was first to complete all the tasks required and is far ahead of everyone else,” says Welding Instructor Jim Hudson.  “He is working on his fourth WV State Welding Certification.  Mike has also served as a Career Tech Tutor.  I believe Mike demonstrates all the necessary traits required of a model student and future employee.”

In addition to his school work, Mike was involved in Boy Scouts through tenth grade and was employed at Keds Ace Hardware in Moundsville.

The son of Edward and Kathy Knuth, and grandson of Mary Anderson (Moundsville, WV) and Edward and Alyce Knuth (Wheeling, WV), Michael is enrolled in the Combination Structural and Pipe Welding Program at Hobart Institute and plans to join a trade union after he completes his training in May 2008.

william b. and marcia h. Howell Scholarship

In memory of William B. and Marcia H. Howell, their children Johannes and Deborah Howell Kurd and Robb and Joann Howell established an annual scholarship within The Troy Foundation for students to further their education in welding at the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology.

“Both of our parents’ lives were tightly intertwined in Hobart Brothers Company.  They believed in and supported the welding industry and were both strong believers in education and affording opportunity to those wishing to participate in its advancement,” says Deborah Kurd.  “By offering the scholarship in their memory, we feel we are furthering their commitment.”

U.S. citizens with the proper credentials are urged to apply for the $750 scholarship by April 1 of each year through The Troy Foundation, 216 West Franklin Street, Troy, OH 45373. Applications for the scholarships are available from the offices of The Troy Foundation or on the website Hobart Institute of Welding Technology - Troy OH- Scholarship Website  Info

An independent selection committee of The Troy Foundation reviews applications and makes the awards in May.  Students may use the scholarships toward tuition for any program of welding training at the Hobart Institute.  Unused portions of any scholarship will be returned to the fund within the Troy Foundation for use by future scholarship winners
