American Welding
Society Revises Standard on Welding Symbols
AWS A2.4:2007, Standard Symbols for Welding, Brazing, and
Nondestructive Examination Now
Available
Miami, FL, June 28,
2007 – In today’s environment, where quality control
and manufacturing efficiency is paramount, it is
increasingly critical that joining processes and examination
methods are conveyed in a consistent manner. To maintain
this uniformity in communication, the
American Welding Society (AWS) today
announced their newly published standard,
AWS
A2.4:2007, Standard Symbols for Welding, Brazing, and
Nondestructive Examination.
AWS is the world’s
largest nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the
science, technology and application of welding.
This
American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-approved
standard establishes a method for specifying certain
welding, brazing, and nondestructive examination information
by means of symbols. These symbols are intended to be used
to facilitate a standard dialogue as it pertains to the
areas of joining and examination, particularly among design,
fabrication and inspection personnel, to help accelerate and
ease the production process. In addition, the standard also
provides a means for placing welding, brazing, and
nondestructive examination information on drawings. Detailed
information and examples are provided for the construction
and interpretation of these symbols.
This seventh edition of the
standard represents the culmination of many years of work by
the AWS A2 Committee on Definitions and Symbols. It was
developed in response to industry demand for standard
symbols to streamline communication between fabrication,
design and inspection personnel as joining technology is
increasingly advancing and expanding.
The standard contains 138 pages, and is priced at $144 for
non-members or $108 for
AWS members.

The American Welding Society (AWS) was founded in 1919
as a multifaceted, nonprofit organization with a mission to
advance the science, technology and application of welding
and allied joining and cutting processes, including brazing,
soldering, and thermal spraying. Headquartered in Miami,
Florida, and led by a volunteer organization of officers and
directors, AWS serves more than 50,000 members worldwide and
is composed of 22 districts with 250 sections and student
chapters. For more information, visit the Society’s website
