WELDING FOR SPEED
Hobart Institute grad, Cody Shuss, utilizes
his welding expertise to make improvements and repairs on race
cars at S & G Customs, a shop he owns with his friend, Mike
Gribble. Cody performs sheet metal and roll cage welding and
fabrication, while Mike handles the body work, sheet metal
fabrication, and painting.
On warm-weather
weekends, you’ll find these guys, along with Cody’s
step-father, Tracy Lovell at
Midvale Speedway in Ohio,
racing their three Chevy Cavaliers in the Compact events on the
3/10 mile oval asphalt track. The three race as a team for
South Side Racing. Cody has even ranked first place in his heat
a few times… a goal he has each time he enters a race.
Cody began
welding three years ago at Buckeye Career Center. After
graduating from New Philadelphia High School in 2005, Cody
enrolled in the nine-month
Combination Structural and Pipe
Welding Program at Hobart Institute that he learned about
from the HIWT Admissions Representative.
“I wanted to
better my skills so I came to Hobart,” said Cody, who completed
his Hobart training June 30, 2006. “Welding is not only a
career path, it is also a hobby for me.”
It is obvious
that welding is in Cody’s blood when you see his car # 118
carrying the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology and Miller
names along with the slogan Dream It Weld It. His goal
is to build his business and to weld in the field of racing.
Cody most enjoys the TIG (gas tungsten arc) welding process and
believes in the Miller Power of Blue.
