Fall 2005 World of Welding

OHIO INSPIRES BUDDING ARTIST

A 2005 graduate of Four County Career Center, Bryan Gonzalez selected an Ohio theme incorporating The Ohio State University’s block “O” and the buckeye for a welded art project in James Fox’s welding class.

“I began my design using a computer to create a 30-inch x 30-inch pattern to transfer to sheet metal,” says Bryan.  “Then, working with 1/8-inch thick sheet metal and utilizing a plasma cutter, I cut the shape of the State of Ohio.”

The base of the project is the state flag.  Bryan used a metal piece that was ¼-inch thick with dimensions of 18 x 36-inches to obtain the shape that he cut with the use of a hydraulic shear and a plasma cutter.  To attach the State to the flag, he took a one and one-half-inch thick pipe that was 45-inches long.  Slightly bending the pipe for better viewing visibility, he welded the pipe to the State on a 45-degree angle.

Using sheet metal for the block “O”, measuring ¼-inch x 17 ½-inches x 22-inches, Bryan cut the outside of the “O” on the shear and hand cut the inside of the “O” with a plasma cutter.  The leaf and the buckeye were cut of 1/16-inch metal.  Bryan used a round stencil made of steel to help cut the rounded edges of the buckeye.  A three-dimensional perspective was achieved by using two ¼-inch thick bars that are 2-inches long to help offset the “O” that was then welded onto the flag base.  The buckeye was then welded to the flag base as well.

Bryan plans to pursue a career in art.
