75TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
13 – 14 MAY 2005
On May 13, 2005, a press conference was held at the Hobart
Institute to provide members of the media with information
concerning the Institute and the anniversary event. Those in
attendance included board members William H. Hobart, Peter C.
Hobart, Robb F. Howell, Andre A. Odermatt, E. Scott Santi,
Gregory S. Schaffer, and Ron L. Scott; members of the media
including Steve M. Baker of
WHIO-TV7, Mandy Sheridan and a videographer of
WDTN-TV2, Sue Keeton and Joe Weaver of Troy
Public Access TV9, Doug Page of
Dayton Daily News, Ron Osburn of
Troy Daily News, Howard Woodward of
the Welding Journal, and Ron
Craig of Ryerson University in Canada. Andre Odermatt provided
a presentation and information about the Hobart Institute,
followed by a question and answer session with members of the
board. A meeting of the HIWT Board of Directors followed this
event.
At 7:00 p.m. on May 13, Troy-Hayner Cultural Center hosted a
book signing and presentation of
The Industrial Hobarts
by Peter C. Hobart and Michael W. Williams. Members of the Troy
community were provided an opportunity to meet the authors.
Refreshments including hot hors d’ouvres, desserts and fruit
were served to the guests.
On Saturday, May 14, at 2:00 p.m., a rededication of
the
Unity of Man fountain was held at the Hobart Institute.
Participants of this occasion included Rev. Dr. James Wilson II,
U.S. Representative John Boehner,
State Senator Tom Roberts,
State Representative Diana Fessler,
Troy Mayor Michael Beamish,
AWS Executive Director Ray Shook, William Hobart, Peter Hobart,
and
Andre Odermatt. Proclamations were presented by Sen.
Roberts, Rep. Fessler, and Mayor Beamish. Ray Shook presented a
plaque to the Institute. Mrs. Aka Pereyma, artist and sculptor,
provided a few words connecting welding and art.
Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed an open house and tours
of the Institute along with refreshments.
The Puzzle of Light,
lead by musicians Michael and Sandy Bashaw, presented a concert
at the Hobart Arena at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday evening. Michael
is the sculptor and creator of Sound Sculpture that was a
gift from the Hobart Institute to the City of Troy in 2002.
Following the indoor concert, guests were invited to the
sculpture at the corner of N. Market St. and Staunton Rd. and
were privileged to hear instrumental sounds of that piece of
art.

ANNIVERSARY
On behalf of the members of the Senate of the 126th
General Assembly of Ohio, we are pleased to congratulate the
Hobart Institute of Welding Technology on the memorable occasion
of its Seventy-fifty Anniversary, celebrated May 14, 2005.
In commemoration of this prestigious milestone, the students,
staff, and faculty of the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology
are hosting an open house and rededication ceremony of the
Unity of Man fountain, which was sculpted by George
Tsutakawa and originally dedicated for the 50th
Anniversary of the Hobart Brothers Company on June 20, 1967.
This event provides a fitting time to pay tribute to the
institution and to reflect on the school’s numerous achievements
while looking with optimism to the future.
Since its founding, the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology
has afforded countless students the training necessary to
succeed in the business world. We are certain that this
remarkable school will maintain its commitment to providing
quality welding education and that it will advance its standards
of excellence in the years to come.
Thus, with great pleasure, we commend the Hobart Institute of
Welding Technology on its Seventy-fifth Anniversary and extend
best wishes for ongoing success.

Recognition of these prestigious milestones is a fitting tribute
to the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology, for since its
inception, it has played a vital role in preparing countless
students to meet the challenges of the future. Opened by the
Hobart family in 1930, the institute offers education and
training in welding skills and technology and conducts
certification and qualifications for the welding industry.
Throughout its history, the school’s faculty and administrators
have given willingly of their time, energy, and abilities far
beyond what was required or expected, and we are certain that in
the years to come, these fine educators will continue to help
students become capable, well-rounded individuals.
Education is vital to our nation’s economic and social well
being, and as the need for global learning and understanding
increases, so do the demands placed upon our system of
education. Over the years, the Hobart Institute of Welding
Technology has consistently and effectively met these demands,
and as they take part in these events, the school’s students,
staff, and alumni can be justly proud of this fine institution.
Thus, with great pleasure, we commend the Hobart Institute of
Welding Technology on its Seventy-fifth Anniversary and on the
rededication of its fountain.

PROCLAMATION
Whereas: Hobart Trade School was established in 1930 by
Hobart Company, in an effort to train individuals to use the
“new” welding equipment that they were manufacturing; and
Whereas, Hobart Trade School filled
their welding training booths with women while men joined the
ranks of the military during the war; and
Whereas, Hobart Trade School
received a non-profit 501(c) 3 charter from the State of Ohio in
1940; and
Whereas, Hobart Trade School had a
capacity of 64 students with 90 percent of those students being
former military, as this type of training was approved under the
G.I. Bill of Rights; and
Whereas, Hobart Trade School opened
a new facility in 1958, located in the Westbrook section of
Troy, and in 1964, the welding library which has become one of
the largest libraries in the U.S.A. dedicated to welding
information was established; and
Whereas, Hobart Trade School
originally installed the Unity of Man fountain in 1967,
which was renovated in 2004, and rededicated at this 75th
Anniversary Celebration; and
Whereas, Hobart Trade School was
renamed Hobart School of Welding Technology in 1970, and again
renamed Hobart Institute of Welding Technology in 1991; and
Whereas, Hobart Institute of Welding
Technology offe3red to students in 2005, sixteen skill courses,
two diploma programs, and nine technical courses; and
Whereas, Hobart Institute of Welding
Technology has trained over 85,000 welders to enter the
workforce with respectable earning power, and have conducted
over 5,000 weeks of corporate training; and
Whereas, Hobart Institute of Welding
Technology has as its mission to be the premier welding
institution worldwide; and
Whereas, Hobart Institute of Welding
Technology celebrates their 75th Anniversary.
Now, Therefore, I, Michael L. Beamish, by
virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of
Troy, Ohio do hereby proclaim Saturday, May 14, 2005, to be:

In the City of Troy, Ohio,
and I urge all Citizens to join me in congratulating those who
make this great institution the pillar that it is within our
community.
