Fall 2004 World of Welding

HIWT RECOGNIZES EXCELLENCE

The Hobart Institute knows that many people go above and beyond the requirements or levels of desirability to exceed normal expectations.  Armed with a plan, the administration has established a new program to recognize this excellence in performance in several categories.

PERFECT ATTENDANCE

Employers have repeatedly told us that attendance in the workplace is a top priority within their companies.  In response to that, HIWT has made this is as a goal for students who may earn this status by attending Hobart Institute in the five-month Structural Welding Program or nine-month program Combination and Structural Welding Program without missing even one day of class.  A certificate of perfect attendance and letter from the president of the Institute will provide students with an additional credential as they enter the job market.  Employers should grant consideration to this achievement  when  hiring  HIWT alumni.    The  recent recipients of this award include Larry Fulk of Dunkirk, Indiana and David Strasfeld of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

Much like the dean’s list in college or honor roll in high school, the Hobart Institute provides two levels of academic achievement.  This recognition is based on the grade point average of students in the five or nine-month programs at HIWT.  Candidates for this award must reach a GPA or 3.5 to 3.79 to receive high honors and 3.8 to 4.0 to receive the highest honors.  A certificate and letter from the president may be placed with their resume and job application as a means of telling prospective employers that they have earned above average grades throughout their training and are willing to strive for excellence demanded in today’s workplace.

HIWT ALUMNI

Here is where you can help!  The Hobart Institute is seeking individuals who completed programs at HIWT and are now successful in the welding industry and have promoted welding and the Hobart Institute through their career path.  We anticipate that these people may be more difficult to find and are soliciting your assistance in this effort.  Do you know of someone who frequently speaks of and influences the training of others due to their own learning experience at Hobart?  You might find this person in your workplace as a co-worker or manager or company owner.  We would appreciate an e-mail or phone call with their name, company, and contact information.  hiwt@welding.org or 1-800-332-9448, ext. 5051

In this category, Hobart Institute recognizes:

Doug Longenecker - New Hudson, Michigan

VOCATIONAL WELDING INSTRUCTORS

The criteria have been established and these welding teachers have their work cut out for them!  Industry wants trained welders and HIWT wants to assist vocational welding students in achieving higher levels of earning power.  In view of this, we are asking vocational welding instructors to send your graduates to us.  To receive recognition as an instructor, you must send us a minimum of four (4 ) students over a time period of four years.  That is just one student per year or may be cumulative (2 students each year for 2 years; 4 students in one year, etc.).  Remind your students that they must list your name or tell us about your influence when they register for classes at the Hobart Institute.

Our thanks and appreciation go to the following instructor who has received a recognition plaque:

Russ Durham -  Southeastern  Career  Center,  Versailles, Indiana

INDUSTRY FRIENDS OF HIWT

Through the years, particular individuals in the welding industry, recognizing the level of excellence provided by Hobart Institute and having an awareness of the need for welding training within their own facilities, have consistently recommended to management that employees be sent to HIWT for specialized training.  Please contact us at hiwt@welding.org or 1-800-332-9448, ext. 5051  if this scenario fits someone in your workplace.

In this category, HIWT recognizes the efforts of:

Harry Lamoreaux - Triumph Thermal Systems

Congratulations to these individuals!

We are certain there are many more of you who qualify within these categories.  You?  Your counterpart?
