Fall 2004 World of Welding


IN MEMORIAM

 JOHN S. BIRD

John S. Bird, 78, of Troy passed away on Friday, June 18, 2004.  Born in 1925 in England, John was a graduate of Ridley College in Ontario, Canada and Princeton University.  He served in World War II in General Patton’s Army and was a liberator at Dachau Concentration Camp, later continuing his service in the Pacific Theater. 

Well-known as a sales manager for Hobart Brothers Company and later as superintendent of Hobart Institute of Welding Technology, John was respected throughout the welding industry.  He was active locally at the Aullwood Audubon Nature Preserve, Troy Museum of History, Troy Elks, American Legion, and Troy Kiwanis.  He enjoyed reading, golf, and many other sports. 

John was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church where a Mass of Christian Burial was held on June 22.  He is survived by his wife, Eileen F. Bird; two sons, John S. Bird, Jr. and David Bird; and one daughter, Kathy Cox, along with several grandchildren and a great-grandchild. 

Memorial contributions may be made in John’s name to the American Cancer Society or to Brukner Nature Center at 5995 West Horseshoe Bend Rd., Troy, OH 45373.
