THREE
GENERATIONS MAINTAIN WELDING OPERATIONS
“I’m
82 years old and still welding,” says Albert F. Mathon, the
senior member of the family.
A retired welding teacher after 17 years at BOCES in
Westbury, New York, and founder of High
Speed Salvage in Medford, New York, Albert has passed along
his talents to his son, Albert W. and his grandson, the third
Albert Mathon.
“I
attended Hobart in Troy for many courses during my teaching
days,” comments Albert F.
“All the information I got there enhanced my knowledge
and helped my career very much.
I appreciated the relationships that were developed at
Hobart.”
His
initial welding training, however, began in the 1930’s when he
began welding at Gatun, Panama Canal and then served in the U.S.
Navy in the 1940’s, repairing aircraft and performing aluminum
welding.
This led to his first company, Headmaster,
where he worked first with the aviation industry and later
with the racing industry welding aluminum and cast iron engine
parts.
By the early 1970’s he saw a need to salvage high-speed
cutters through weld repairs and his new company, High
Speed Salvage was begun.
“Recently,
we designed a V-16 aluminum engine for the boating industry.
The low rpm, light engine is appropriate for cruisers and
offshore fishing vessels.
Interest in the V-16 was so keen that we are in the
process of mass-producing them as an all cast aluminum engine.
His
son and grandson are now running the family business in New York
and Albert F. is enjoying some time in Florida.
But he is not one to sit back in the sun and relax.
So, in his “retirement”, he is repairing aluminum and
cast iron cylinder heads for engines… and still welding.
