FROM WINE TO VINE
If
harvesting grapes, the title of this article should be
reversed. However, the career of Larry Stern has a different
scenario. Six years ago, Larry owned a retail liquor and wine
store in New Jersey that had been his livelihood for eleven
years until a mega-store put him out of business. As relaxation
from the stress of losing the business, Larry began a hobby of
designing and making wine racks.
“My
customers begged for the wine racks that I no longer used,” says
Larry. “So I thought, why not make them myself? And so the
Vine Rack was formed.”
Larry took
basic welding lessons from a friend and is now welding and
shaping 1/64” sheet metal into unique wine racks. He has
graduated from shielded metal arc to gas metal arc welding and
his artistic product has improved with his ability.
Larry
believes that collecting wine is an art that should be displayed
for all to see. He creates various vine designs that are custom
made to your choice of color and style. Some of these include a
three-bottle wall-mounted or standing rack, a four-bottle that
may include a wine glass holder, a six-bottle vertical or
horizontal design, up to a nine-bottle standing vine rack. The
vine rack is made of steel and the hanging ones are flush with
any wall.
“My
attitude since the loss of the store has remained positive
because of welding,” Larry comments.
